John Griswold’s works fuse rigorous scholarly dissection of mythological classicist tropes with surrealist modes. He continuously builds a core lexicon of symbolic devices, some appropriated from 17th century emblem books, baroque mythological iconography, and alchemical treatises, and others mined from his library of over 1,000 video tableaux in his Instagram gallery @liberveritatis.  These serve as the foundation for his oil paintings and automata, which, in turn, are captured, dissected by virtual collage methods, and layered back into the source material for the films. Griswold’s training as an art conservator permeates his archaic painting techniques.
