Since beginning his painting career in the 1980's as a "Postmodern Classicist," John Mason Griswold has drawn upon his training as an art conservator. He dissects classicist tropes, surrealistically recombining their fragments using historically derived painting techniques with the intention to create objects and images capable of inducing wonder.

Inspired by Renaissance and Baroque iterations of Greco-Roman mythological iconography, hermetic emblemata and esoteric symbolism, he continuously recombines an ever-growing lexicon of symbolic devices. Griswold’s “moving picture” tableaux become models for his paintings, which he then often deconstructs and layers back into these animated collages. The resulting serendipitous combination of relic sounds associated with each of the video clips adds a multisensory dimension of immersion in a never-before explored liminal space.
